A professor at the School of Arts and Aesthetics (SAA), Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof. Datta offers courses on Khayal, approaches to music histories and comparative histories of classical traditions. Formerly training as a historian at the University of Delhi, he earned his B.A., M.A., and M.Phil. degrees from Delhi University and his Ph.D. from Jamia Milia Islamia. A historian with fellowships from the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and Queen’s University, Canada, Datta has published ‘Planning the City: Urbanization and Reform in Calcutta c.1800-c.1940’ and co-edited ‘Urban Spaces in India.’ Beyond academia, he has contributed essays on labor and medical history, along with music criticism for The Pioneer and reviews for The Book Review, Delhi.
